Edan Merritt is an Australian filmmaker, writer, director and editor based in Sydney, New South Wales. Driven by a passion for visual storytelling and cinema, Merritt creates films that explore emotion, isolation, nostalgia and the human experience, often using visual imagery and atmosphere to communicate ideas beyond dialogue.

Merritt’s filmmaking journey spans writing, directing, cinematography and editing, with a particular interest in independent filmmaking and creating cinematic experiences with limited resources. His work reflects a fascination with the relationship between image, sound and emotion, and the ability of film to evoke feelings that extend beyond what is seen on screen.

His short film Escalate was selected as an 11th finalist in the SF3 Kids competition, screening at the Sydney Opera House in January 2026. His subsequent short film While I Was Away became a finalist in SF3, earning a place in the festival’s 2026 program.

Continuing to develop his craft through independent projects and collaborative productions, Merritt is focused on building a body of work as a filmmaker and director, with ambitions to create distinctive stories for both Australian and international audiences.
