Nick Hart is a struggling American artist who lives amongst the expatriate community in 1920s Paris. He spends most of his time drinking and socializing in local café's and pestering gallery owner Libby Valentin to sell his paintings. He becomes involved in a plot by wealthy art patroness Nathalie de Ville to forge three paintings. This leads to several run-ins with American rubber magnate Bertram Stone, who happens to be married to Hart's ex-wife Rachel.

Top Critics Reviews

rotten:
A movie that makes an afternoon with Gertrude and Alice more boring than a faculty tea.
– Vincent Canby,
New York Times,
4 Aug 2003
fresh:
It takes place at that enchanted moment in Paris when the Lost Generation created itself and then proceeded to create, promote, fabricate and publicize modern literature, art, music and attitudes.
– Roger Ebert,
Chicago Sun-Times,
1 Jan 2000
rotten:
Everything is ersatz, even the surrealism in Alan Rudolph's 10th movie.
– Rita Kempley,
Washington Post,
1 Jan 2000
fresh:
Rudolph's weaknesses pale before the film's overriding textures: Toyomichi Kurita's cinematography exquisitely crosses color with sepia and blacks and whites.
– Desson Thomson,
Washington Post,
1 Jan 2000
