Highlighting one of the most innovative American directors, this film reveals the path traveled by the auteur from his small-town Texas roots to his warm reception on the awards circuit. Long before he directed Boyhood, Richard Linklater’s intense desire to create fueled his work outside the Hollywood system. Rather than leave Texas, he chose to collaborate with like-minded artists crafting modest, low-budget films in a DIY style. His ability to showcase realistic characters and tell honest stories was evident from his films, and others soon took notice of his raw talent.

Considering its subject often enjoys the simple wonder inherent in characters who look into the distance, "Richard Linklater: Dream Is Destiny" does an extra-fine job of looking back with similarly rich and appreciative curiosity.

While not an earth-shaker, this documentary is an amiable, informative look at a guy who is shaping up to be, yes, one of the major American directors of the last fifty years.

It's shamelessly partial but also warmly pleasurable, partly because Mr. Linklater is an engaging and humble conversationalist who moves easily to the beat of his own soundtrack.

A documentary portrait of the director of 'Boyhood' and 'Dazed and Confused' is full of revealing offscreen footage as well as a pinpoint feeling for the filmmaker's visionary humanism.
