On the first day at his new school, Cameron instantly falls for Bianca, the gorgeous girl of his dreams. The only problem is that Bianca is forbidden to date until her ill-tempered, completely un-dateable older sister Kat goes out, too. Top Critics Reviews
rotten:
At times the pic doesn't even seem certain which decade it's set in; the squeaky-clean high school environs often feel more '80s than '90s.
– Dennis Harvey,
Variety,
16 May 2008
fresh:
Stiles grows into her character and Ledger is effortlessly charming.
– Geoff Andrew,
Time Out,
24 Jun 2006
fresh:
Stiles nails her feminazi, bound-for-Sarah Lawrence shtick, but just as easily melts into giggles or pulls off a slapstick drunk scene.
– Steve Murray,
Atlanta Journal-Constitution,
6 Mar 2005
rotten:
The movie wimped out by blanding down the story and the characters to the point where she isn't really a shrew and he isn't really a maniac.
– Mick LaSalle,
San Francisco Chronicle,
18 Jun 2002
rotten:
The notion of a contemporary high school as a hotbed of romantic intrigue is utterly apt, and the performances almost make the update work.
